The Fashion Week Ahead

"Slimmed down" is rather an understatement, if you (like the rest of our city's glitterati) are talking about the super-light schedule of LG Fashion Week (Beauty by L'Oreal), the newly and unwieldily named celebration of local style. Seriously, this schedule needs to eat a sandwich. Usually we'd be dying for a turkey-and-swiss ourselves by this time on Day One; instead, we're eating a sixth bowl of cereal and watching nailpolish dry. The first—and last—show of Day One isn't until tonight, after Holt Renfrew's annual cocktail party (a mecca for media and other shmoozehounds). And the rest of Fashion Week: Recession Edition is busier but hardly strenuous.

MUSIC: Remember baggy pants, pure MDMA, and walking home as the sun cast its judging rays across the still streets at 7 a.m.? Well, the Crystal Method are back to do it all over again. Head down to hipsterville and catch their DJ set tonight. The Social (1100 Queen Street West), 10 p.m., $19.50 in advance.

Overcast skies and underwhelming temperatures have us mourning a premature end to a summer that barely got started. Where are the dog days of August? The humid patio evenings? Like, why are we wearing sweaters to Sweaty's?

MUSIC: British remix artist and musician Joseph Mount plays the Social with his band, Metronomy. They are joined by Toronto electro trio Modele. Treat yourself to a few $2 drinks before 11 p.m., and stay for the show. The Social (1100 Queen Street West), 10 p.m., $5 before 11 p.m., $10 after.

In a city that, he says, is devoid of an electrifying dance music scene, Matt Sims is offering up a brand-new way for party-goers to dabble in dj beats. "I feel there been a lot missing from the dance music scene down here," Sims wrote in a release sent to Torontoist, "so we’re here to save it!" His solution? Dopplehertz.

1963 was basically the Year of the Fly: think Warhol, The Beatles, The Feminine Mystique and all kinds of awesome. If you're into free love and feminism (or cool feminist girls), join McClung's magazine for 1963 at The Social tonight, January 15, at 9 p.m. The retro-groovy party celebrates the launch of the Ryerson student publication's winter issue (and raises funds for the spring edition) and will feature rad DJ duo Camp So Chill. There will also be free candy, a raffle and prizes for best sixties costumes.

French rap group TTC makes one thing clear on their MySpace page: "We don't make rap for people who don't like rap. We make rap for people who love rap more than anything else in the world, and who fucking love many other things too." They're a passionate bunch.

The Ryerson Review of Journalism is one of the most acclaimed magazines in the country – and it’s run entirely by the students of Ryerson University’s school of journalism. Running a national magazine is a costly endeavour, so to fill the coffers the RRJ is hosting a black-tie fundraiser this Tuesday night. It promises to be a good one.
