A Day That Will Live in Infamy

Always a bridesmaid! Torontoist has been a finalist for Best Canadian Blog at the Bloggies—basically, the Oscars of the blogging world—for three of the last four years, but we haven't yet won. That sad fact didn't change today, when winners were announced down at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, and we were defeated by Everybody Likes Sandwiches, a food blog that must now, out of necessity, become our greatest enemy. You can see the trauma we experienced above, live in the IRC channel that the Bloggies had set up to broadcast the event for those who couldn't make it to Austin (allaboutgeorge_ was the one announcing the winners). Thanks to everyone who voted for us! If the Bloggies are the online Oscars, we are henceforth making it our mission to become their Kate Winslet, which means we're only like three years away from actually winning something.

Torontoist is one of fourteen cities in the worldwide Gothamist network. Each Sunday, the editors of every site—from LAist to Londonist—choose their most interesting article, a list which is compiled into the network-wide feature Elsewhere In The Ist-A-Verse.

It seems like, all across the network, folks were up to no good. Maybe it was all the green beer from last weekend...

We're guessing most of you are hungover from St. Patrick's Day. Some of us are too. But still, we're going to muddle on through our green haze and give you (drum roll please...) this Week In -ists.

Spring appears to have, er, sprung, at least temporarily, in most of the Ist-A-Verse, so naturally, we're all feeling pretty good. (Yes, we know that spring doesn't start till later this month. Just let us enjoy our weather!) And that makes us that much more eager to share all of the nifty things we're up to...

Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico.

Valentine's Day is only a few days away, and we here across the Gothamist network would like to tell you, in the spirit of the holiday, just how much we love you, our readers. Don't let it get to your heads, though. There are plenty of things we love, you included. Just be glad you're not amongst the things we hate.

Between fake terrorist alerts and scandals big and small, this just might be the Best Best of the -ists ever. We're exhausted just thinking about it.

Austinist was in a musical frame of mind as they listened to the new Shins album, updated the SXSW band listings and got called "punk rock" for their efforts by MTV. And an ice storm swept through the area.

We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing.

Sunday. Usually, a quiet, contemplative day in the Blogosphere. But not here in the Ist-a-Verse. Nonono! Just look below and see all of the wild and crazy stuff our staffs are up to.

Star_in_Rittenhouse.jpg This was not a very happy week for the -ist network as one of our own, Phillyist co-editor Star C. Foster, passed away early in the week. Her wit, intelligence, and good nature shone through the site, making Phillyist an immensely fun read. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. Phillyist paid tribute to her this week with a heartfelt letter to her and an obituary.

Internet stalking has blown to outrageous proportions on the interweb and the Missed Connections page on Craigslist is the hotspot for the lonely-hearted as well as the mildly (or moderately) curious. Recent hot topics on the Missed Connections page have included the Cheese Magic boys, the Soundscapes crew, and the Euclid and College Starbucks bunch. Torontonians have brought stalking to a new level by going above and beyond daily trips to buy an extra brick of Roquefort, spend cash on rock discs, and relax with a cup of Grande Latte (on the rocks) and a wandering eye. The burning question still remains: is inter-stalking a successful endeavour?

SFist commeters pose for before and aftershocks when the mayor commemorates a 1906 earthquake...at 4:30 in the morning. A hot tip on the Chronicle vending machines comes in and the SFist war correspondent risks life and limb to post this dispatch from the frontlines.

Zoilus is very close to convincing us to go check out Auktyon, a St. Petersburg band formed in the 1980s back when the city was still called Leningrad. The band is coming off shows throughout the US including SXSW.

Phillyist notes a fistfight between local pols that leaves one man down for the count. Jehovah's Witnesses get a Philly contributor out of bed, things get a little geeky with a film festival and geeky gets taken to a whole new galaxy when they talk with the Dragon Queen of the Dark Kingdom.

http://thestar.blogs.com/sxsw/">Ben Rayner and Geoff Pevere are blogging the fest and we're wondering whether Chromewaves will find anytime to blog the fest knowing his musicgoing ways. We'd also be remiss if we didn't plug our cousin blog Austinist, a must for local insight.

Let's just whip around the world to see what the other -ists are up to...

After seeing the majority of the SXSW reviews read more like diary entries or travelogues, Torontoist decided to review the final Blow-Up in timeline form. Here's the shake down of the Saturday that was:
