So Bob Kinnear successfully negotiates a contract for Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113. The transit-using public breathes a sigh of relief, believing the threat of a transit strike to be past. A few days later, the union membership rejects the contract and surprises everyone by striking later that night. Sound familiar? Sure it does, but this time it's York Region's Viva instead of the TTC. Kinnear seems to be making a career of negotiating contracts......

General Motors cut 900 jobs in Oshawa yesterday, mostly related to the production of oversized trucks and sport-utility vehicles. A spokesperson for the CAW angrily called upon for the Canadian government to "discover more oil somewhere so these jobs can remain relevant." The United Nations formed a task force today to tackle the global food crisis. Oh, well, now that the United Nations is involved in the global food crisis, all our problems are......

Ding, ding, grumble, grumble…the TTC is back on track for the Monday morning commute, ushering in a new era of mutual respect, trust and fellowship between riders and employees. Anyway, it turns out that while Torontoist was trapped at home all weekend drinking and shaking an impotent fist at Bob Kinnear's smug televised face, there was non-TTC news going on out there too. U of T President David Naylor told The Globe And Mail......

Taxi! Taxi! The posturing shifted into high gear today in the TTC labour dispute, as union president Bob Kinnear announced that if his people don't get satisfaction this weekend, 1.5 million Torontonians are going to be looking for another way to get around as of 4 a.m. on Monday. Kinnear came out swinging at a press conference this morning, telling assembled reporters that TTC employees were "second class citizens" compared to city workers and......

Sarah Lazarovic—curator of the garage-based Montrose Portrait Gallery of Canada—is painting a portrait of a Torontonian every day. Each Monday, we'll feature some of those portraits here. Suggestions for subjects welcome. Clockwise from top left: - Bob Kinnear, head of the TTC's largest union. - Anne, letter carrier. - Sameer, graphic designer. - Greg, founder of some sort of moustache appreciation society.......

Our favourite civic phallic symbol is turning 30 soon, June 26th to be exact. It's still the world's tallest free-standing structure (what does this mean anyway?). The Toronto District School Board is facing a budget shortfall of about $85 million. But it won't make any cuts without first holding a public meeting. In the meantime, the trustees are feverishly lobbying Queen's Park for more cash. Lots of TTC news today. First talks with the union......

The Star leads with a story leaking the fact that the McGuinty government is going to announce that they'll want to build more nuclear plants now that their plans to scrap the province's coal plants aren't going forward anytime soon. Despite other coal plants staying open the Lakeview Generating Station did come down this morning. City Pulse reports on the dramatic demolition of the plant. On another environmental matter, York and Durham have given the......

The man with the second most thankless job in the city (TTC Union head Bob Kinnear takes the cake for this one we think) has tendered his resignation. The Star has a nice PDF of it here and a story on the whole sordid situation. The CBC doesn't shed much more light except that it was Adam Giambrone who confirmed the resignation. The media has been abuzz with rumours that Ducharme was not getting along......

Turns out that the union was actually ready to walkout again yesterday. Fortunately a few last minute desperate phone calls prevented what would've been a disastrous second wildcat strike in as many weeks. The TTC and the union are still in intense negotiations. Hopefully they can avoid any future job actions. Other than Bob Kinnear, most of the city's other major unions give Mayor Miller the thumbs up. The TSX was one of the......

Thankfully, yesterday's TTC strike fizzled out and the city's buses, subways and streetcars are now running again. Kevin McGran at the Star dissects yesterday's events and points to an automated phone message from union head Bob Kinnear as the spark that caused TTC employees to walk out. Also in the Star, drivers are facing the heat from pissed off passengers. Scarborough Hospital is being sued by a patient over dialysis machines that were contaminated with......

You've probably already figured it out but the TTC is on strike. Metro Morning and the CBC are keeping us on top of things and they're reporting that Bob Kinnear, the head of the TTC union are willing to comply with orders from Ontario Labour Relations Board to go back to work. He's waiting for "the papers." It would be really easy for us to point fingers and assign blame. The knee jerk reaction......

Everyone is talking about how TTC Operators will now turn a blind eye on those who are evading fares. The union is complaining about the rising number of assaults and "passenger rage." TTC Chair Howard Moscoe says that people still have to pay their fares. The Sun's story is here and has some wacky numbers like the fact that assaults have gone up over 30% in a decade. The Star's piece has more of the......
