Ryerson's Ernie the Hot Dog Vendor Hangs Up the Tongs

2006_3_7ernie.jpgThe Eyeopener The Ryersonian broke the story that Ernie the Hot Dog Vendor is calling it quits. The moustachioed sausage slinger has been a fixture at Ryerson for over 25 years and won the hearts and stomachs of many hungry students through initiatives like a bursary day that has helped out dozens of students.

The former engineer has made sure that the bursaries will keep going, he's already raised $21,000 to go towards a fund that'll keep giving to the students he's fed for so long. For his third act Ernie is trying to take on the theatre. He's apparently writing a musical.

"You're familiar with Damon Runyon, a writer whose beat was Times Square in New York? Well, we've written a play about Dundas Square and characters around our corner," he said to the Star. A hot dog vendor that name drops Guys and Dolls writer Damon Runyon, how cool is that?

Just to clarify the error in your article, it was not the Eyeopener that broke this story. It was the Ryersonian.
For the past seven weeks The Ryersonian carried several stories about Ernie with no competition from the Eyeopener.
Just sayin' is all.

Having been a student journalist I know getting appreciated is something that doesn't happen often. So there ya go. Keep us updated on any Ernie happenings!

Awww, Im a Ryerson Grad and I LOVED Ernie, this is a sad day for all Ryerson Street meat-ers. We'll miss you Ernie!

Ernie the hot dog guy is *not* breaking news. And according to Ryersonian sources, neither are dirty bathrooms getting cleaner, homies and students who can't afford to relax during reading week.
